ADAS Calibrations

ADAS Calibrations by KeyCal

There are 2 types of ADAS recalibration procedures that vary from one vehicle to another. These are:

Static Calibration

These are performed in a workshop.  The workshop must have level ground (less than 1 degree slope).  Space requirements vary depending on which calibration is required and the make of the vehicle, but generally a clear space of 10m x 6m is required.
If a camera calibration is required then lighting is an important element.  Generally the work space cannot have bright overhead lights (or skylights) or be next to a window/door as the light will effect either the camera directly, or the glare of the light off the pattern board will prohibit the calibration.

Camera calibrations (such as Lane Departure Warning) require a specific target image mounted on a fixture with a precise distance and height from the vehicle.

For RADAR calibrations it requires either a RADAR reflective plate, or a powered Doppler box positioned at a specific distance, angle and height from the vehicle.
Light does not impact RADAR calibrations, however RADAR reflective objects in the vicinity of the calibration will interfere with the calibration.

Dynamic Calibration

The car must be put into diagnostic calibration mode and then driven to specific conditions for the calibration to complete.  It usually requires a 10-15 minute drive above a certain speed threshold in good weather conditions and specific lane markings, signs or objects on the side of the road such as railings or lamp posts.

To ensure that the calibration process is completed properly, parameters and guidelines by the car manufacturer must be strictly followed.

Some vehicles require both a static and dynamic calibration to achieve a successful calibration.

KeyCal for ADAS Calibrations

After each calibration we perform a test drive (regardless if it is static or dynamic calibration) where we test the system is fully functional and operates as expected.  We then perform a final post scan that will detect if any new faults have occurred during the drive which will identify problems with any systems in the vehicle.

A full copy of the pre-scan and post-scan are provided on completion and include the results of the calibration performed, any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) pre/post calibration and photos/screenshots of the calibration.
